When do I plant trees in zone 7?
I live in a zone 7 climate, and I have started designing some house plans, but I want to get my trees planted and so they can get established before we break ground. I am in early stages of deciding which trees I even want to use, so any info is helpful. I want to get a variety of trees, and I really like aspens, blue spruces, poplars, elms…the list goes on. When is the best time for planting trees?
Trees can be planted pretty much any time the ground can be worked. The trickiest time to plant them would be in the heat of summer. You need to be careful then so they won’t dry out, and a little shade while they’re settling in is helpful.
Transplanting, however, is another story. Transplanting should be done while plants are dormant. So if you have to dig up those trees before replanting them, do so before they bud out in the spring.
But if you’re buying nursery-grown trees in pots or balled in burlap, you can plant those any time the ground can be worked. They’re much better off in the ground than in pots.
